the magento cluster
We are very transparent about what you get with our hosting and simplicity is the key to our redundant network, a server for each task and another server to fulfil the role of each respectively (in the rare scenario that one may fail!).
the firewall
To make sure your data and cluster is safe, we use an industry standard Cisco ASA firewall. It has been set up to block dDOS attacks, close all unused ports and help guarantee internal network security.
It does presently exist as our only SPOF, but with engineers on call 24/7 - if a failure occurred a replacement would be near instant!
the loadbalancer
Our load balancers are clever little toys, they work by accepting any web request, then forward it to the least busy web processing node - to ensure load is evenly distributed across the network. If one of our nodes is suffering from high traffic or a hardware failure, it is immediately removed from the load balancer's list of nodes and your website continues to seamlessly run - even in the event of a hardware failure!
They also help boost performance by providing a Layer 7 proxy and caching service, ensuring your images and other static content are delivered lightening fast - we consider it our very own mini CDN.
the web node
Our web nodes are little powerhouses with Quad Core 3.0GHz CPUs and more RAM than you could shake a stick at! They rapidly process any incoming request before firing back it out. We have many nodes to a cluster and can rapidly deploy additional units to combat any unexpected load.
They are also clever with resource sharing, allowing us to dedicated nodes purely for the "/admin" area - ensuring tip-top performance for customers, even during heaving product manipulation. These lower power elements not only help us do our part for the environment by using a tiny 0.2A of power, but help keep costs low for you!
the SAN
The key, the core, the big cheese - the SAN is a big piece of the cluster's infrastructure, it is what contains all the files for your website. Because there are many nodes, we only keep 1 working copy of the data and the SAN provides a big "shared" resource for all the nodes to access the files for your website.
It is an extremely powerful Dual Quad Core 2.5GHz system with a RAID array of enterprise class 2.5" 10,000 RPM SAS disks. No - we don't use SSD's - we don't believe in marketing hype, we believe in real-world performance, our disks are not only far more reliable but outperform SSD's in every respect!
the MySQL database
Magento loves to have a big database, and that's why we give you a big database server - running an equal set up to our SAN, it can deliver unparalleled performance to the entire cluster without breaking a sweat. And all the while it is working away, it also clones itself in real-time to its own slave server, ensuring 100% MySQL uptime in the event of a hardware failure!
